"It's easier to get forgiveness that permission!" Before I came to know God as my Lord and Master, I would quote this sentence quite often, especially when I was fixing to do something I knew I shouldn't. I thought it was cute and true. To a certain extent it is true. I thought that is really didn't matter what I did as long as I didn't hurt anyone else.
"It is better to get permission than forgiveness!" 1 Samuel 15:22 could be paraphrased this way. God desires not only to forgive our sins but He wants us to obey Him in the first place. In 1 Samuel, Saul the King constantly and consistently disobeys God. Even though Samuel tells Saul what God wants, Saul doesn't get it. He goes off and does what Saul wants to do, like keeping all the best loot from defeating his enemies instead of destroying it all as God told him to do.Saul want to make himself look good. God wants Saul to obey God , thus giving the glory to God where it belongs, not to Saul, where the glory does not belong.
It is the same with us in modern times. How many times have we thought," God won't mind if I just keep _______ for me. He has the whole universe, He won't miss my little _________. I'll just give Him _____ instead and I know if I really ask Him to bless me and be real humble when I do ask, He will forgive me and accept this little offering that I have decided to give Him."
When we act this way we miss being really close to God because God draws Himself close to those that obey Him. He protects those that do His will. He gives them strength to conquer the trials of this world so that people can look and see with their own eyes that those who follow God are at peace, strong enough to withstand temptation, and genuinely care for all of God's creation. God wants us to bring ourselves closer to Him so that others can be brought closer to God.
The world judges Christians by the way we "walk the walk". They may or may not listen to what we say, but they certainly see how we behave. Actions truly do speak louder than words.
WorDs or WorKs? Which has the most impact? Which is more easily understood? Which is less likely to confuse those who don't Know God?
